It is the
third time I have an approach with my students, and it's right here when I
really understand that teaching has a lot of challenges. I have 30 souls in my
classroom, and even I know that this is only the beginning, I feel a little
blue. In those three classes, my students have behaved violently, they are hitting
each other, they throw objects, or having a terrible vocabulary. Sometimes,
trying to talk with them is mostly impossible.
Even those
are situations that can happened to any professor, an
out-of-control situation sometimes is desperate.
Nevertheless,
I try to stay positively, after all, we don’t know why they have those behavior.
As educators, we must be friendly and kindness as possible, they are just teenagers
expanding themselves in their own worlds.
When I met
them, we did a little icebreaker activity in which they talked about their
name, their residence, their age and something they like, such as their
favorite hobby, favorite food, or something really important for them! At the
end of every mini presentation, I gave them a motivational phrase “You only
fail when you stop trying”, a pen, and a chocolate. In spite everything, they liked the
activity and they were very grateful for their pencils.
Try to motivate
them to participate is difficult sometimes because they feel shame. However, I
try to remind them that we only learn if we don’t stop trying, also, we are not
experts, and it is perfectly okay to make some mistakes.
With those
experiences, I consider that, even sometimes it is difficult, I can find a lot of lesson lives for my own experience. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn more (The phrase was also a little reminder for me).
I hope to
cultivate a classroom where they can feel safe and free to make risk in their learning.
This is a journal for both, them and me, and together we are learning. I hope
they can learn a lot from me, and I hope to learn a lot from them. 💟
Your post about your third encounter in real-life classrooms reminds me about something essential about teaching: we are dealing with souls. Each student brings to class their hopes, dreams, expectations, but also issues and sorrows. It is fundamental to remember to motivate our students DAILY, not just once in a while, but every single class, and by the post you made, I perceive you are doing wonders with them! Do not get discourages by bad behavior, but be consistent, with your kindness, words of encouragement, and classes that they enjoy. I am confident that you will see great results soon!

What is important is that we learn from them, as you said every challenge is an opportunity to learn.
