An opinion on The Royalty Chapter.

An opinion on the royals:

The Royalty is an amazing chapter of the book The Ten Students You'll Meet in your Classrom by Vickie Gill.  This chapter emphasizes on those students that have some “privilege” for different reasons such as, their families, their appearance or because being part of a sport team.  These privileges can sometimes create unintentional divisions within the student body.

As teachers, it is important and fundamental to avoid fall on appearances or status. We must remember that each student is an individual. It is essential to create environments that encourages personal growth where all the students feel equally, also, remember that we are working with teenagers.

Creating a classroom where all students feel safe and equally valued, we impulse them to live their life, enjoy their individuality, and to learn about their own mistakes. This approach will help students to become more empathetic and responsible citizens in the future.

Also, the chapter offers us some advices. Those are my favorites:

-          Keep a portfolio with each student´s work.

This portfolio is very important on a teacher´s life. It will help in order to let the student know which areas they need to reinforce. Moreover, those portfolios are used to let parents and administration know about each student´s progress.

-          Create an environment that encourages positive risk-taking in our classrooms.

To create a well teaching-learning process, it is crucial for students to know they are in a safe place, where all of us can make mistakes. Without mistakes we don’t learn!

-          Be careful that your personal prejudices are not influencing how you treat a student in the classroom.

As teachers, we must understand children and teenagers live in different realities, it is important do not judge for past experiences. All people deserve a second chance, and teaching is a major that is create not only to teach bout also to take care of learners.

Of course, all the advices are very useful, however, I wanted to dept on those three that catches my attention the most! I hope we, as future teachers, really understand why this chapter is very important, giving us an approach of the reality of teaching.

  1. I absolutely agree with you!
Having a portfolio for each student can be difficult when you manage big groups, but its worth the effort. This can help you with a physical registry of the classwork and properly assess that big percentage.
Also, being careful with prejudices is one if not the most important considerations that a teacher must have. In a classroom you can find a huge variety of situations, contexts and problems that a student can have from outside of the high school.

  2. I think you have summarized a very important topic and I fully support your point of view on the matter. It is difficult to think that in the past and even in recent years, there are "teachers" who do not reflect on big concerns such as prejudices and how they handle mistakes during class. It definitely brings a whole different experience for students when this is handled correctly and gives more opportunities for students to develop and flourish in their most important years. We must share and spread this way of thinking. Thanks for your contribution

The Power of Teachers

Helloooo! My name is Daisy, I´m 21 years old and I am a girl with a lot of mixed feelings and many dreams. Right now, I am studying English Teaching major in the Universidad de Costa Rica. I chose this major because I consider professors play a crucial role in society, they are the people that encourage more souls. Around the world with can find doctors, engineers, mathematics, musicians, chefs and many others professions, nonetheless, any of those occupations could be achieve without the presence of the person that shares his or her knowledge; a teacher. I remember when I was in high school, I met a French teacher, she was a really nice person. One day, when I was having some personal issues in my life, and my mental health was declining I had class with her. She noticed that I was not myself and at the end of the class, she took some time to offered me her support, she really helped me. I remember she was very friendly and kindness, she gave me a lot of advices. Since that da...

You Only Fail When You Stop Trying.

It is the third time I have an approach with my students, and it's right here when I really understand that teaching has a lot of challenges. I have 30 souls in my classroom, and even I know that this is only the beginning, I feel a little blue. In those three classes, my students have behaved violently, they are hitting each other, they throw objects, or having a terrible vocabulary. Sometimes, trying to talk with them is mostly impossible. Even those are situations that can happened to any professor, an out-of-control situation sometimes is desperate. Nevertheless, I try to stay positively, after all, we don’t know why they have those behavior. As educators, we must be friendly and kindness as possible, they are just teenagers expanding themselves in their own worlds. When I met them, we did a little icebreaker activity in which they talked about their name, their residence, their age and something they like, such as their favorite hobby, favorite food, or something really import...

With Love: Teacher Daisy

I have already finished my practicum, and I have no words to explain how joyful it was. At the beginning, I felt it was something very difficult to achieve, however, then I realize when you love what you do, nothing is impossible! Passion and dedication are essential keys. Little by little I started knowing my students, some of them very quiet while others were totally the oppositive (Talkative, and full of energy.). However, that´s perfectly right, they are just teenagers and each student brings something special to our classrooms. To know different students and their amazing personalities was great! It is amazing to be the person that reinforce their knowledge. Teaching is a career in which we have to have love, patient, be kindness, and empathy to connect with our students. It is essential to take the time to understand them in order to help them not only in their knowledge, but also to be the better version of themselves. During my practicum period, we studied units abo...
