An opinion
on the royals:
The Royalty
is an amazing chapter of the book The Ten Students You'll Meet in your Classrom by Vickie Gill. This chapter emphasizes on those students that
have some “privilege” for different reasons such as, their families, their appearance
or because being part of a sport team. These
privileges can sometimes create unintentional divisions within the student
body.
As teachers, it is important and fundamental
to avoid fall on appearances or status. We must remember that each student is an
individual. It is essential to create environments that encourages personal
growth where all the students feel equally, also, remember that we are working
with teenagers.
Creating a
classroom where all students feel safe and equally valued, we impulse them to
live their life, enjoy their individuality, and to learn about their own mistakes.
This approach will help students to become more empathetic and responsible
citizens in the future.
Also, the
chapter offers us some advices. Those are my favorites:
-
Keep
a portfolio with each student´s work.
This portfolio is very important on a teacher´s life. It will help in order
to let the student know which areas they need to reinforce. Moreover, those
portfolios are used to let parents and administration know about each student´s
progress.
-
Create
an environment that encourages positive risk-taking in our classrooms.
To create a well teaching-learning process, it is crucial for students
to know they are in a safe place, where all of us can make mistakes. Without
mistakes we don’t learn!
-
Be
careful that your personal prejudices are not influencing how you treat a
student in the classroom.
As teachers, we must understand children and teenagers live in different
realities, it is important do not judge for past experiences. All people
deserve a second chance, and teaching is a major that is create not only to teach bout
also to take care of learners.
Of course,
all the advices are very useful, however, I wanted to dept on those three that catches
my attention the most! I hope we, as future teachers, really understand why
this chapter is very important, giving us an approach of the reality of
teaching.
I absolutely agree with you!
ResponderBorrarHaving a portfolio for each student can be difficult when you manage big groups, but its worth the effort. This can help you with a physical registry of the classwork and properly assess that big percentage.
Also, being careful with prejudices is one if not the most important considerations that a teacher must have. In a classroom you can find a huge variety of situations, contexts and problems that a student can have from outside of the high school.
I think you have summarized a very important topic and I fully support your point of view on the matter. It is difficult to think that in the past and even in recent years, there are "teachers" who do not reflect on big concerns such as prejudices and how they handle mistakes during class. It definitely brings a whole different experience for students when this is handled correctly and gives more opportunities for students to develop and flourish in their most important years. We must share and spread this way of thinking. Thanks for your contribution
